The Variations of Plagiarism Spectrum

Plagiarism is a form of theft. According from a website poorvucenter.yale.edu (n.d.), Plagiarism came from a latin word which means "Kidnapper". Plagiarism happens when someone copies another idea completely and takes it as their own without acknowledgement. Plagiarism is shown in different forms and has also different variations. Some people use plagiarism due to the convenience of it and laziness while some people think that some of these types are paraphrasing and may end up using these variations unintentionally.

According to Ms. Laarni Cabanig's (2023) powerpoint presentation and according to the presentation from the website Turnitin.com (n.d) about the topic, there are 10 types of plagiarism which are the clone, ctrl+c, find-replace, remix, recycle, hybrid, mashup, 404 error, aggregator, and the re-tweet. These types are commonly used by people especially to students. Which is why these spectrums will be furtherly elaborated to spread awareness. These spectrums or types will be explained based from what was understood by me and based from the references seen.

To sum up the first 5 spectrums: Clone is completely copying the entire text. The CTRL+C is changing only tiny parts and copying the rest without citation. Find-Replace also only changes tiny parts but they only take keywords, phrases, commonly used words and change some words into the synonym of it. Remix is a paraphrasing mix of several information from others into one. Recycle is the borrowing and reusing of text created previously by the same writer who copied.

The sum of the last 5 spectrums are: The Hybrid which is also as similar as CTRL+C but with a mix of cited and not cited information from others. Mashup is a mix of different information with no paraphrasing at all. 404 Error are citations of researches that do not exist or the use of wrong information of the text. The Aggregator provides cited information but with no originality shown. Lastly, the Re-Tweet which also includes cited information but is still too close to the original work still.

Overall, based from my own gather up amd understanding. Plagiarism is cheating, it is a crime which is why citations and paraphrasing are completely important. It is also why learning these spectrums of plagiarism can benefit a person in their academic writing. Even as a student myself, I may have unintentionally used these sort of spectrums myself sometimes. It is great that I, myself have also learned something new from this topic too to reflect and improve myself.
